The “Soda Bottle Xylophone” is a percussion instrument, like the hanging chimes, made from a wooden sawhorse, string, glass bottles, paint and water.

It is a member of the percussion family because striking the glasses with a mallet causes them to vibrate, producing its sound.

The glasses are filled with different amounts of water to change their pitch. A glass with more water produces a low sound when struck and a glass with less water produces a high sound when struck.
