The name of my musical instrument is The Bangaglass. It is called this because you bang a glass. I got the idea of making this because I like playing percussion instruments. I think it is interesting that you can change the pitch of the sound higher, or lower by adding, or taking away water. The instrument family that The Bangaglass is in is percussion. My instrument sounds like a high-pitched ding. Also, it is very sparkly since I put glitter glue on it. The large pieces of tape near the opening on the top tell you the order the glasses should go in. If there is one piece of tape on the top, it means that it is first in order. The skinnier line tells you how high you should fill it. If you do not put the right amount of water in each glass the scale will be off.These are the materials I used to make The Bangaglass. The most important ones that I used were the glasses. I got these flasks from my dad's laboratory. I got five of them. Also, I used glitter glue to make some of its design. I got it for my birthday two years ago. To make the lines for the water measurement, and the order, I used graphic art tape.
This is how I made my instrument. The first thing that I did to make my instrument was to make my water levels. I had to add and take away water until the glasses sounded good when I played them. Once I found that out, I put the tape where the water level should be, and for the order of the glasses. My mom helped me put on the tape so that it would be straight. After that, I took the glitter glue, and put 5 dots of every color on the outside if the glasses. The colors were red, green, blue, yellow, and silver. While I was doing this, I accidentally let a bit of the glitter glue fall into one of the glasses. I made an idea to do this with all the glasses so that it would not look like a mistake. (The next day when the glue dried, I tried to do a test by putting water in it and the water caused the glitter to come of. I then decided to just wash all of the glitter glue out so that the water would not be foggy.) Also, another problem I faced was that although the glasses look alike when you hit them without any water, they have a different pitch. So even if one glass may have more water in it does not mean it will have a lower pitch. The last thing that I did was put a band of color around the glasses. I put the band between both the water level tape, and the order tape.Last, I will tell you how to play The Bangaglass. The way that you play this instrument is to hit the glasses with an object. To change the pitch of the sound you can hit different glasses. If you have no water in the glasses then the pitch will not change as much. There are different ways to change the volume of the sound. First, you can hit the glasses harder. The next way is to use different objects to hit the glasses. If you use a metal object and a wooden object, they will make different sounds. The last way is to strike the glasses in different areas of it. I found out when I was practicing with them was when you hit the glasses closer to the top or bottom, the volume is lower then compared to closer to the center. That is how you play The Bangaglass.
In conclusion, I thought that making a musical instrument was OK. The only parts that I liked were that you got to decorate the instrument, and that you got to name it. I think that writing this paper was not too bad. This is because in the pamphlet that Mrs. Rexford gave us, it told you what you needed to write.
