Fifth graders studied the four major families of musical instruments: strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion. They studied how each instrument makes its sound. Students were allowed to work with a partner outside of school to create a sound invention. The students used the internet to get ideas for instruments. The rubric for evaluating the instruments was based on the rubric in the Virtual Museum of Music Inventions.
