The first thing I did was measure and place a mark on a copper tube, dividing it into six different lengths: three, four, six, eight, ten, and twelve inches. Next I cut the tube with a tubing cutter. Then my dad and I went in his shop and he drilled two holes in one end of each of the six copper pieces with a drill. After the holes were drilled my dad put the roll pins in and got them started. I finished taping them into each piece. When that was done my dad showed me how to tie a string onto the copper piece and I tied the rest. My dad cut a groove into a wood piece to make sure the string didn't slide all over. My mom and I went shopping for decorations. My mom showed me how to clean the pieces up so they would shine. Then I put the stickers on the copper pieces and on the striker. I worked on my instrument for 5 days. My instrument is stroked to make a sound. I can strike it one by one or I can go along in a row and hit them so they all make sound together. I can change the dynamics, by hitting it lightly I can make the sound soft or I can hit it harder to make it loud. The pitch on the shortest piece is high and the pitch on the biggest piece is low. The timbre of my instrument is "church bells." |
