The Magical Tom-Tom Drum

My mom and dad helped me make my instrument. I chose a pattern, then mom and I went to Walmart to get the materials. The first step was to read all of the directions with my parents. I picked out the color of paper I wanted my drum to be. Putting the paper on was hard so I had my dad hold it while I taped it on.

I shoved two pencils through the bottom of the two flower pots to hold them together while I taped them together at their bottoms. I glued on two decals to the side of each pot to give it a musical look.

To make the top and bottom I had to use white cotton muslin. I measured the circles and cut them out. Next I punched holes with a pencil so I could sting the cord through them and pull the head of the drum tight. The last step was to spread the glue all over the heads to form a harder surface for striking.

I strike the drum hard for loud dynamics and lightly for soft dynamics. My drum has different pitches depending on where you hit it. If you hit it in the middle the pitch is lower, if you hit it on the edge the pitch is higher. I would say the timbre of my drum is pounding, noisy and even a little dull.
