Rainbow Drums

by Abby S

The first thing I did to make the rainbow drums is using the hand saw to cut the two ten foot long PVC pipes in four pieces in the garage.  The second thing I did was take the pipes down to the basement to cut three pieces out of the four I already had.

The next thing I did was I sanded the twelve PVC pipes in case I decided if I was going to paint them.  Another thing I did was sand the rectangle and square pieces of wood with the electric sander.

The fifth thing I did was drilling the holes in the wood so my dad could use a special drill bit to cut out the holes for the PVC pipes.  Next I put two balloons on each PVC pipe with the ends cut off then put rubber bands on the PVC pipes and rolled the end of the balloons over the rubber bands.

Then I put the two wood blocks on each end of a metal tube.  Then I slid the pipes in the holes in order from tallest to shortest.

The sound is produced by hitting or tapping the drums. The pitch changes when I hit the taller pipes the pitch is lower.  When I hit the shorter pipes the pitch gets higher.  The dynamic changes when I hit the drums the sounds is louder, when I tap the drums the sound is softer.  The timber changes to bong when I tap it, when I hit it it makes a "wong" sound.
