The Blood Shot Flute

THE BLOOD SHOT FLUTE

By: Bryanna P.

The instrument I choose to make is the Blood Shot Flute. I got the idea from a music packet my teacher gave me. The materials I used were plastic tube red paint and tape. Most of everything I used came from my basement. The tools I used were my grandfather's pocketknife to cut the note holes. I then used a bread knife to cut the mouth hole as well then I put the tape on.

My first step was to cut the mouth hole.  Make sure you cut it at least one inch. Then I cut all six of the finger holes, which have to be a centimeter apart. Cut three holes for your left hand then skip an inch and put three more holes for your right hand. Make sure the holes are still a centimeter apart. Then put tape on the side with the mouth hole on it. I decorated it by dipping it in a gallon of paint three or four times, letting it dry between each coat. Let the paint drip out of the flute before you place it somewhere to dry.

My instrument belongs to the wind family. The sound is made by placing you're lips on the mouthpiece and then blow air through the flute. The flute makes sort of a high-pitched sound, but you can make some low-pitched sounds if you blow just right. The sound is short and smooth. You can make a pretty soft sound. Sometimes if you blow hard enough the flute will make a loud sound.

My dad helped me with some of what I did. He helped me with the cutting and painting. He helped me cut out the holes, but I still got cut on cutting the mouthpiece. The biggest problem I had with my instrument was the painting.  It was dripping everywhere we had to cover part of the kitchen, with almost all the newspaper in the house. And you have to make the holes just right, or they will make a weird sound. In total it was fun to make and play.
