The Bowl Drum

THE BOWL DRUM

By:  Jessica B.

The name of my instrument is the Bowl Drum. I got the idea for my instrument one night when I started drumming on a bowl and realized it made a nice sound. The materials that I used to make the Bowl Drum were two clear bowls, decorative lace, glitter glue, garland, drumsticks, and mini drum ornaments. I got my materials from my kitchen, the craft store (Michael's), and the store (Target). The tools that I used to make this project were scissors, super glue, and a paintbrush.

The first step I took in making my homemade instrument was I squeezed some super glue all along the rim of the bowls. Next, I stuck the bowls together and let them sit for at least 24 hours. To decorate the instrument, I used the paintbrush and mixed different colors together and then painted them on the bowls. What I did next was I hung the mini drum ornaments on the garland and the glued the garland along the perimeter of the bowls. After that, to give the drum a decorative touch, I glued the lace on one of the flat sides of the drum (the bottom of one of the bowls).

The instrument family that my instrument belongs is the percussion family. The Bowl Drum makes a sound when you hit either side of the drum with the drumsticks. Since the sides of the bowls happen to have ridges, you could also scrape the sides of the bowl with the drumsticks. You could also shake the drum and you will hear the mini drum ornaments beating against the side of the instrument. Also, when you hit the side of the drum that has the lace, it makes a different sound than when you hit it on the side without the lace. Overall, my instrument can make up to four different sounds. The Bowl Drum makes a very deep, loud sound when you hit it. The Bowl Drum is about as loud as a dog's bark.

My sister helped me put the glue on the bowls. The biggest problem was the glitter took a long time for the glitter to dry.
