TRI-TAR By: Kevin S. My instrument is called a Tri-Tar. It is called that
because it is a triangular guitar. I got the idea when
everyone said that they were making maracas and drums. I
used
1) a big sheet of
plywood that was only one layer thick. 2) a maple two by
four 3) lots of wood
glue 4) and some old
moulding. Some tools I used were
1) a jig saw 2) an electric
saw 3) a sander 4) a belt
grinder 5) and many "umptillion"
vices. I got all the materials from my dad and my
grandpa. The steps I used
were
1) cut off a square of
plywood 2) trace the front and
back onto the wood 3) cut them out with the
jig saw 4) cut out the
sides 5) glue together 6) install the bridge,
supports, and neck with screws 7) cut a piece of the 2
by 4 and screw it in place 8) sand down the edges
and stain 9) drill holes for the
eye nuts 10) screw in the eye nuts and knot on the
strings. Even though it has strings, it is also a percussion
instrument because you strum the strings. It makes 2
different sounds. A sharp whack when you bang on it. Or it
can make a subtle strum. The strum is not very loud, but its
vibration is much quicker. My dad and my grandpa helped me. My dad used his
electric saw and drill. My grandpa used his jigsaw and army
of vices to construct my instrument. One problem we had was
that the eye nuts kept snapping.
